Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), located on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia, began construction in 2011 and reached full completion in late 2024. The Millennium Reservoir, which the dam impounds, started filling in 2020 and achieved its target capacity in September 2023. The dam is now operational, generating hydroelectric power to supply electricity across Ethiopia and neighboring regions. However, GERD remains a point of contention with downstream countries, particularly Egypt and Sudan, due to concerns over water flow regulation and potential impacts during periods of drought.
