This timelapse captures the striking rhythms of the Gezira Scheme in Sudan — one of the world’s largest and oldest irrigation projects. Located between the Blue and White Nile near Khartoum, the scheme uses gravity to distribute water through more than 4,300 kilometers (2,700 miles) of canals across gently sloping land.

The shifting colors across the circular fields reveal crop rotation, a method where different crops are planted in the same area across seasons to preserve soil health and optimize yields. Cotton is the primary crop here, but rotation with other crops helps maintain the land’s productivity year after year.
