Updated Satellite Imagery of Blatten

Before and after of Blatten, Switzerland — a village buried on May 28 following the collapse of the Birch Glacier.

In these additional Overviews, you can clearly see how the landslide blocked the Lonza River, forming a growing lake that now threatens to flood remaining structures and downstream communities. Roughly 90% of the village was buried beneath millions of cubic meters of ice, rock, and mud — most of which is visible in the second Overview. The third frame shows the dramatic path of the debris, tracing the slide’s origin from the Birch Glacier down to the village.
