Growth of Hanoi

Hanoi, capital city of Vietnam, has seen its population boom in recent decades, from about 1 million in 1985 to more than 8.5 million in 2023. Much of this growth was sparked by the Doi Moi reforms of 1986, which opened Vietnam to international trade, expanded education and public utilities and initiated pro-business policies. As its population increases, Hanoi’s urban footprint has sprawled outward from the Red River.
