Fast-spreading wildfires blazed across several neighborhoods of East Attica, Greece, on Monday, stretching toward the northern suburbs of Athens. Fueled by strong winds, prolonged drought and dense stretches of forest, the fires have burned at least 150 square miles (400 sq. km) in less than two days. Wildfires are not uncommon in Greece, but have been more frequent this year as the nation experienced its hottest June and July on record.
