In recent days, wildfires have been ripping through Bordeaux and Biscarrosse, France, and Ávila and Castilla y León, Spain. In Gironde, flames have forced over 220,000 people from their homes and are now roughly 30 kilometers from Bordeaux, destroying homes and shutting a major highway with smoke. In Spain, fires have scorched tens of thousands of hectares — including 22,000 in Ávila’s Navaluenga blaze — prompting a national emergency after at least one death. More than 300,000 people across both countries have been displaced as crews from across Europe join the fight against blazes fueled by a heatwave soaring above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F).
