Whakaari, also known as White Island, is an active stratovolcano located 30 miles (48 km) off the North Island of New Zealand in the Bay of Plenty. Around 2 p.m. local time today, the volcano erupted and spewed thick clouds of ash as high as 12,000 feet (3,657 m) into the sky. White Island is a popular tourist destination, and officials report that visitors were on or around the island when it erupted.
