Large scale deforestation has caused much of Madagascar’s tree cover to disappear in recent decades. This Timelapse shows tree clearing along the Onilahy River in the Atsimo-Andrefana Region, which lost more than 60% of its intact forests between 2000 and 2020. Poverty and drought throughout much of this region causes residents to exploit natural resources for income, burning trees for charcoal production and occasionally starting uncontrolled wildfires.
