Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has grown sixfold since the 1980s, its population exploding from 1.3 million in 1984 to more than 8 million today. As a result, the metropolis continues to sprawl outward from the Klang River and now covers more than 1,000 square miles (2,800 square km).
