On February 7, 1984 astronaut Bruce McCandless conducted the first untethered spacewalk. We were deeply saddened to hear of his passing a few days ago at the age of 80. In this iconic photograph captured by his fellow crewmembers aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, Mccandless is approaching his maximum distance from the vehicle. Following the walk, when asked to describe the panorama with the Earth below him, McCandless remarked “It really is beautiful.”
