In this Overview, we’ve blended together two images of the same area in southeastern Australia to show the devastating impact that brushfires have had on the region since mid-November. The first image shows clear skies over the border of Victoria and New South Wales on July 24, 2019, and the final frame shows a blanket of smoke covering the entire area on January 1, 2020. An estimated 14.8 million acres (6 million hectares) of land has burned since the fires began, destroying thousands of homes and killing at least 18 people. As of yesterday, 130 fires were burning in New South Wales and 31 were ablaze in Victoria.-37.550000°, 149.750000°
