Year in Review: Wildflower Superbloom
Recapping some of 2023’s big events as seen from space, here’s a superbloom of wildflowers blanketing California’s Carrizo Plain in April. This phenomenon occurs when a high proportion of wildflower seeds that have lain dormant in desert soil germinate and blossom at roughly the same time. Since 2023 was an unusually rainy year in California, this year’s superbloom was exceptionally striking, with fields of brittlebush (yellow flowers), California poppies (bright orange), and lupines (purple) seen from space.
