Waimakariri River
The Waimakariri River flows for 94 miles (151 km) across the South Island of New Zealand, beginning in the Southern Alps and emptying into the Pacific Ocean. In the mid-19th century, it was briefly named the Courtenay River before reverting back to its traditional Maori name, which means “river of cold rushing water.”
