Madeira is a Portuguese island in the North Atlantic Ocean, located off the northwestern coast of Africa. It is volcanic, green and rugged, with most of its 250,000 inhabitants concentrated in villages at the mouths of ravines around its exterior. With the other islands of the Madeira Archipelago, it is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal, the other being the Azores.
