Agricultural development in the Liwa Oasis, near Kayyam, United Arab Emirates, has boomed in recent decades. ‭In the mid-1980s, farmland covered just over 3.8 square miles (10 square km) in this area, and by 2002 had more than doubled to 8.1 square miles (21 square km). ‬Since the UAE averages 12 days of rain a year and contains less than 1% arable land, there is widespread use of drip irrigation and greenhouses in this area.
