Lake Poopó is a saline lake in the Altiplano Mountains of Bolivia. At peak water levels, it covered roughly 390 square miles (1,000 square km) and was the second-largest lake in the country, but now it is almost completely dried up. Scientists believe that diversion of the lake’s waters for agriculture and mining played a large role in its decline.
