Due to the loss of water at Lake Mead and throughout the Colorado River Basin, the U.S. Interior Department has asked surrounding states to agree to deep reductions in their water use. If these several states do not have a plan by Tuesday, Jan. 31st, the federal government will impose its own cuts on water supply. The largest reservoir in the United States, Lake Mead’s water level has dropped from 1,225 feet in July 1983 to 1,059 feet in May 2022 — the lowest since it first began to fill in 1935.
