Kumasi, Ghana

Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana, has seen its population increase sevenfold in 40 years, from around 500,000 in 1984 to 3.7 million today. This growth has been partly caused by the city’s timber industry, which produces about half of all lumber nationwide. As Kumasi has urbanized, the surrounding rainforest has become increasingly fragmented by urban sprawl.
