Since the 1980s, the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal has expanded rapidly, with farmland giving way to dense neighborhoods, roads, and industry. Today more than 1.6 million people live in the capital, making it the political, cultural, and economic heart of the country.
This month, that same density became the stage for mass protests led largely by young Nepalis, demanding accountability and an end to corruption. The demonstrations turned violent, leaving dozens dead and forcing the government to form an interim cabinet.
