In the last two decades, illegal gold mining has been on the rise in the Peruvian Amazon. This Timelapse shows the effects of illegal mining in an area called La Pampa, located along the Madre de Dios River. Criminal organizations here bring in as much as $300 billion a year in gold while contributing to deforestation and contaminating soil and water.
