Since opening in 1985, the Cerrejón coal mine has grown to cover more than 270 square miles (690 sq. km) on the northern tip of Colombia. It is the largest mine of its kind in Latin America, with six pits in operation and an estimated coal reserve of 503 million tons. Colombia’s coal production has increased consistently from 4 million tons in 1981 to 65 million tons in 2022.
